Skull and Bones – Storyline

The story told in Skull and Bones unfolds in the 17th century in the Indian Ocean, during the golden age of piracy. At the beginning, you, as the main pirate, lead a luxurious ship with a hold full of gold into the lair. But British Alliance ships are after you, the ship sinks along with the crew, and the main character barely survives in a fierce battle. The goal of the game is to gather a new crew and build the best ship. You also need to repay the debt for the sunken cargo and, of course, prove to the entire community that you are a true sea legend.

To get back “on track,” you need to work for a pirate leader, sink competitors, and rob trade convoys. By achieving a high position in this criminal world, you can build a real pirate empire, earn gold, and gain fame. However, in Skull and Bones, robberies alone are not enough; you need to learn to trade with other factions and reclaim areas of influence in the ocean from other players.

Skull and Bones – Gameplay and Core Mechanics

The ship is at the center of all gameplay activities. It’s where you gather resources, trade, explore, and conquer. The hero visits the port for new missions. Initially, it seems unusual and inconvenient that almost everything needs to be done without leaving the helm. There are few activities on land, and most of the gameplay takes place at sea.

Naval battles in Skull and Bones deserve special attention. They are very spectacular, especially during storms. There are shootouts with enemy ships and dangerous ramming attacks to sink the opponent. The controls are very responsive and convenient, so even beginners can handle it. With a bit of practice, you can stage impressive battles. At the beginning, the battles are quite simple, but they become more challenging as you progress. You will need to learn to attack and retreat.

One of the game’s features is unpredictability. It’s hard to assess the opponent’s difficulty until you engage in battle. To increase your chances of success, you need to skillfully choose equipment and weapons, turning your ship into a real fortress. The selection of weapons is vast – there are powerful but slow mortars, culverins that pierce armor, cannons that set ships on fire or cause leaks.

There are even repair tools that shoot glue to restore the ship’s strength. This way, you can remotely repair friends’ ships in co-op mode. However, you cannot place more than five weapons on one ship. You can also build a first aid post that constantly reduces damage received or a carpentry workshop that enhances the ship’s repair skills.

Exploration of land is limited to outposts and pirate camps. Battles with other robbers and trade representatives can only take place at sea. Most of the islands on the map are decorations. Fruits and wood are scattered across numerous islands, but they are also gathered remotely. Overall, crafting and resource gathering in this game are quite complex and time-consuming. The land is very low-functional. Additionally, there is no melee combat mechanics – you can’t swing a sword or shoot a musket.

Skull and Bones – Progress

In Skull and Bones, there are two types of progression:

  • “Notoriety.” This is the character’s level of popularity. As it increases, more new tasks and unique contracts become available. To spread notoriety across the ocean, complete contracts, sink ships, and discover new outposts.
  • Ship upgrade. This is much more important and challenging than gaining fame. You need expensive equipment and powerful weapons to protect against enemy ships and access quests. Playing in co-op, it’s better to complete tasks simultaneously to upgrade together. The difference in ship size and equipment can spoil the fun a bit.

Skull and Bones – PVP Modes

The player versus player mode in Skull and Bones exists, but to encounter other “live” pirates, you need to sail to a special zone. These zones are small, so you can’t stage a large-scale battle. There are currently only two PVP modes. In one, you need to rob a trade convoy and sink the opponents’ ships. In the other, you need to defeat as many NPCs and other players as possible to capture an underground factory producing rum or opium. It can generate passive income.

Conclusions

Overall, the game Skull and Bones has received positive reviews but also has several drawbacks. It’s interesting and offers various activities such as battles, robberies, resource gathering, crafting, and trading. Everything looks visually appealing, especially the naval battles in storms. The map is quite large and interesting. However, players often complain about boring dialogues and poorly developed elements, such as overly simplistic treasure hunting or lack of activities on land.
